Imphal, March 15 2019:
The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has announced that it would field its own candidate in Inner Manipur PC.
Speaking to media persons at GM Hall here today, AITC Observer to Manipur Biswajit Deb said that AITC would contest the 17th Lok Sabha election in Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa in addition to West Bengal.
At one point of time, AITC had seven MLAs in the Manipur Legislative Assembly and the party was recognised as an Opposition party in the State.
Biswajit said that AITC would field its own candidate in Inner Manipur PC and it has a fair prospect of winning the seat.
The party's leaders, workers and sympathisers have been proposing that AITC should contest the Lok Sabha election in Outer Manipur PC too.
The proposal would be taken to the party's leaders at Kolkata.
Whether the party should field its candidate in Outer Manipur PC or not would be decided after studying the party's prospect in the particular Parliamentary Constituency, Biswajit said.
As of now, it cannot be said for sure who would be the party's candidate in Inner Manipur PC.
Many applications seeking the party's ticket have been received and there are well known figures among the applicants, said the Observer.
AITC will fight the election on some major issues of the State and the party would shoulder pro-active roles towards abolition of the dreaded AFSPA 1958, Biswajit Deb stated.
AITC has been standing firm against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill and the party will continue to oppose the Bill which would have adverse impacts on the whole North East region including Manipur, he said.
Biswajit said that AITC supports the popular demand for enlistment of Meitei community in ST category and the matter would be tabled at the appropriate platform.
Just like what AITC leader Mamata Banerjee has been doing in West Bengal, there will be unprecedented development in Manipur too in case the party comes to power in the State, he claimed.
He then appealed to all the people of Manipur to support AITC in order to make the State a developed and progressive one.
Ahead of the press meet, Biswajit Deb spoke at a one day workers' conference of AITC organised by the party's Manipur unit.
