Incessant rain swells Twilang River, submerges paddy fields

Kangpokpi, May 14 2022:
Incessant monsoon rain which the State has been witnessing since the last couple of days has raised the water level of many rivers and inundated several paddy fields.
The unceasing heavy rainfall also hit Kangpokpi district and it resulted in substantial rise in the water levels of most rivers, specially in Twilang area, causing havoc and panic among the local people since last night.
Twilang River has been swelling dangerously with high current since yesterday and it has submerged many paddy fields.
A villager from Gelnal village said that a large number of paddy fields have already been submerged by the river in Gelnal area, specially at Ngakrapat and Pathajao.
The swelling river has reportedly inundated more than 15 acres of paddy fields belonging to Khupngam Khongsai, Janglal Khongsai, Ngulhao Khongsai, Jangmang Khongsai, and Helmang Khongsai in Gelnal village.
Another villager from Naibet reported that even small rivers and tributaries in Naibet and Tapon are swelling beyond the danger level.
The river has also been seen widening at Tujang Vaichong Sub-Divisional Headquarters and the water is passing through the pillars of the bridge there.
A resident of T Vaichong said that there could be a great disaster in the area if the rain continues to pour for a few more days.
The heavy rainfall also reportedly caused landslides at various places.
The Twilang river also washed away a portion of the main bailey bridge connecting Wakotphai and Phoikon village.
The Gundung river passing through Kangpokpi district headquarters has also been rising alarmingly since last night.
