Imphal, December 12 2013:
With the arrival of festive season, the predominantly Christian district of Ukhrul has become a den of gamblers while many busy themselves organising fairs/melas to earn some bucks on the pretext of fund-raising, reports our correspondent.
Roads and labyrinths of Ukhrul headquarters are filled with gamblers playing tambola (housie), dice game, cards, raffle draw, etc causing much inconvenience to the pedestrians.
Gamblers start their day early in the morning and go on till late at night.

When this correspondent enquired how such gambling could happen in the open, some gamblers said that they shell out Rs 1000 to Rs 5000 to obtain permission from the 'higher authority' .
While some make easy money out of the din, many parents found it hard to meet the growing monetary demands of their children.
Significantly, various civil society organisations of Ukhrul have been enforcing ban on intoxicants.
However, no drive is launched against gambling.
Many denizens of the township conveyed their wish that the law enforcing agency check such rampant gambling.
Meanwhile, when contacted, Inspector P Longpinao of the Ukhrul PS said that all the gamblers can be booked as per law.
However, no one has been arrested in connection with the gambling so far.
