Imphal, February 12 2015 :
Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam has said that detention of RD&PR Minister Francis Ngajokpa and Chandel MLA D Korungthang by Assam Rifles troops at Khudengthabi was a case of showing disrespect to public leaders, who were travelling on the highway in the vehicles having flag-posts.
He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the inaugural function of Umang Lai Haraoba (Kanglei) Festival held at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen today.
The Deputy Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, said that he had written to the higher authority of Assam Rifles and asked the paramilitary force not to repeat such conducts in future.
Saying that some private vehicles always try to come along with the convoy of Ministers and MLAs to avoid security checking, Gaikhangam urged the VIPs to take up necessary action to check it.
Maintaining that all the restrictions on the movement of vehicles on the highway during some particular time have already been removed, Gaikhangam said that the State Government has instructed the security agencies not to give inconveniences to travellers although they have to stop the vehicles which need security checking.
Regarding thrashing of a Imphal Hotel staff by police at Moirangkhom, Gaikhangam said that investigation is going on and action would be taken against those police personnel who are found guilty.
Earlier, speaking at the inaugural function of Lai Haraoba (Kanglei) Festival as chief guest, Gaikhangam said that people of Meitei, Naga and Kuki communities share a common origin.
As such, people must never forget and ignore the age-old indigenous culture and tradition although they have embraced different religions, he added.
MI & IPR Parliamentary Secretary K Meghachandra, Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy Director L Upendra, Art and Culture Joint Director Dr K Sushila and retired Principal and Festival Organising Committee chairman Ng Kangjiya Mangang also attended the function as president and guests of honour respectively.
The festival was organised by Umanglai Kanba Lup.
