Cong justifies districts creation

Manipur Government spokesman who is also Panchayati Raj and Rural Development Minister Moirangthem Okendro has called upon people not to misconstrue the State Government's decision of creating seven new districts.
On Saturday, the Minister addressed the media at the Old Secretariat and elucidated on the final announcement by the Government on the creation of the districts.
The spokesperson said that formation of the new districts will facilitate administrative functioning and smooth communication that will help development activities.
The new districts are: Jiribam, Kamjong, Kakching, Tengnoupal, Noney, Pherzawl and Kangpokpi.
A Boundary Commission headed by a retired Judge has been set up to ensure accuracy in determination of the respective boundaries of the newly created districts, Okendro announced.
The postings have already been given to all Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police of the districts and that they have started duty, according to the Minister.
He said power and function of all Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in the hills are being strengthened.
He rubbished as unfounded allegation that the step of the State Government was aimed at gaining political mileage ahead of the ensuing State Assembly polls.
Okendro asserted that the Government's move is meant to enable administrative convenience and general welfare of people.
With the formation of the seven districts, Manipur now has a total of 16 districts.
Earlier, the number of Manipur's districts was only nine�four in the valley namely, Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal and Bishnupur and five in the hills namely, Senapati, Ukhrul, Churachandpur, Chandel and Tamenglong.
