Imphal, April 09 2016 :
Manipur Government brought light to the unelectrified Tamu town of neighbouring Myan-mar from April 8 under a power purchase agreement signed in 2015.Officials from Manipur State Power Distribution Company Limited (MSPDCL) informed that the power supply to Tamu began on Friday at 9 am from a 33/11 KV power sub-station.
Tamu is located under Sagaing Region in north-west Myanmar near the border town of Moreh, Chandel district in Manipur.
Tamu is a town of Myanmar nearest to India.
The twin markets in Moreh and Tamu have been historically connected for a long time despite the international border between them.
Moreh is located about 118 Kms Southeast of Imphal, the capital of Manipur.
As per the agreement, Manipur has to supply 3 MW electricity to Tamu.
The 33/11 KV power sub-station is installed at Moreh.
The power purchase agreement was inked between officials of Tamu District Committee, Myanmar and MSPDCL.
The primary objective of Manipur government is not only to light up Tamu, but also to strengthen relations between peoples of the two countries.
Under the Act East Policy, the Government of India hopes to make Moreh a hub of cross-border trade with Myanmar.
