Imphal, September 08 2015 :
Amidst soaring prices of all essential commodities after both Imphal-Dimapur highway and Imphal-Jiribam highway have been cut off since a couple of weeks back, the Government of India has withheld the State's rice quota for the months of October, November and December.
According to information received from CAF&PD Department, the Government of India was asking the State Government to implement the National Food Security Act.
Then the Government of India held back the State's quota of rice for the three months.
Generally, rice allocations are issued for three months and the rice thus allocated are transported in advance.
Transshipment of rice for the months of July, August and September has been completed and transhipment of rice for the months of October, November and December should be started from September after due allocation is made by the Government of India.
The Government purportedly held back the State's rice quota for the months of October, November and December as a way of exerting pressure on the State Government to implement National Food Security Act.
The total quantity of rice for the three months is 37248 metric tonnes at the rate of 12416 metric tonnes for each month.
The monthly quota of 12416 metric tonnes includes 2182 metric tonnes for APL, 3478 metric tonnes for BPL, 2227 metric tonnes for AAY, 3602 metric tonnes for Additional APL and 927 metric tonnes for Additional BPL.
Meanwhile, CAF&PD Department has decided to send an official team to persuade the Government of India to release the State's rice quota for the three months as usual until the State Government is in a position to implement the National Food Security Act, informed the source.
