The recently constituted People Committee for Free and Fair Election in Manipur held its first meeting and the meeting resolved to appeal to all concerned to stop offering and accepting money in connection with the forthcoming State Assembly election as well as all merry-making programmes like joint feasts.
The meeting held at Manipur Press Club was attended by Nepram Bihari, Prof Sadananda, retired Lt Col T Hemo and Dr M Nara as presidium members.
The meeting agreed to enlarge the committee apart from constituting a 13-member working committee.
It resolved to appeal to all aspiring candidates to stop repairing roads, drains and renovation of community halls ahead of the Assembly election. Many speakers of the meeting opined that political parties should field candidates after minute screening.
They appealed to all political parties to give party tickets only to the most competent applicants who understand people’s wishes and aspirations and who can debate public issues in a constructive manner.
They further asserted that the office of the CEO should ensure that the election model code of conduct is strictly enforced.
Advocate Khaidem Mani who is the convenor of the committee said that people should use their right to vote conscientiously and elect competent candidates who can debate public issues in the State Assembly.
