Imphal, February 06 2014:
The Seismological Observatory Station at Langthabal Khoupum Ching (hill), which is the second in the State after the observatory station in the Department of Earth Sciences, Manipur University, is set for inauguration in February last week or early March.
With Manipur and the entire North East region lying on the seismologically sensitive Indo-Burma (Myanmar) tectonic plate, the Khoupum facility will give significant boost to seismologists for further research on earthquakes as well as avert collateral damages caused to human and properties, said Scientist C Dr Sanoujam Manichandra of the MU station.
With installation of machinery completed and earthquake study works already underway the Khoupum station will be keeping a close tap on movement of the tectonic plate and try to minimise damage associated with violent tremors, explained the scientist adding that the station set up under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, new Delhi is the second in the country after Hyderabad, set up specifically for in-depth study to predict earthquakes.
Technologically advanced seismology assessment equipment such as strong motion accelerograph, global positioning system, radon monitoring system, theodolite mounted magnetometer, fluxgate magnetometer, satellite synchronised induction magnetometer set, magneto telluric monitoring system, high precision resistivity meter and borhole seismograph have been put in place at the Khoupum station.
With a staff strength of 10 the Khoupum station personnel have been carrying out seismological studies in the North Eastern States and recording relevant events periodically, Dr Manichandra.
He also cautioned that building construction in Manipur needs to be strictly compliant with quality control and structural designs to minimise damages in the event of earthquakes.
