Imphal, December 03 2015:
As observed elsewhere across the world, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was observed today at Khuman Lampak Kangshang under the aegis of Social Welfare Department.
Speaking on the occasion, Social Welfare Principal Secretary SK Dev Verman exhorted all parents to send all their children to schools even if they are suffering from disabilities in order to get them educated and avail all the benefits of different schemes being implemented by Social Welfare Department.
The Government has been working hard to ensure that benefits of all other schemes enjoyed by the people of the State reach all the persons with disabilities equally.
He called upon all the families concerned to support persons with disabilities and make formal education accessible to them.
Social Welfare Director Lukram Nabakishore said that they are awaiting release of fund by the Finance Department in order to bring back the child who was reportedly trafficked to Jharkhand.
As it may take sometime for the Finance Department to release necessary fund, Social Welfare Department would send a few officials to bring back the child within the next couple of days and the department would bear the expenditure.
According to the 2011 Census report, there are 54,910 persons with different forms of disabilities in the State, Nabakishore said and underscored the momentous role of NGOs towards empowering and bringing all persons with disabilities to the mainstream.
Pointing out that disability certificates are issued by Medical Department, he wondered what is hampering the department from issuing disability certificates on time.
This delay has been denying many benefits entitled to a large section of persons with disabilities.
Education allowances are being given to persons with disabilities enrolled in schools/colleges and persons with disabilities who are educated but employed are being given unemployment allowance, Nabakishore said.
Worldwide Peace Organisation founder Sagar Parasri and MCPCR chairperson Saratkumar were also present at the gathering.
