Bishnupur, August 03 2016:
One individual was hurt when Government authorities evicted alleged encroachers from Sendra foothills today while some others collapsed on seeing their houses and other structures demolished.
Notably, the SDC Moirang issued an order on July 23 asking all the alleged encroachers to dismantle their houses and other structures within 10 days but very few structures were dismantled within the given deadline.
Subsequently, a strong police team surrounded Sendra this morning to evict the alleged encroachers.
As the number of people who were determined to resist the eviction drive swelled, additional police forces were called in.
People settled in Sendra foothills and the people of Ithing village resisted the eviction driver which resulted in a tense stand-off between the two sides.
Police fired several rounds of tear gas shells and mock bombs and somehow they managed to drive away the protesters.
Then the standing structures including dwelling houses were demolished using two excavators (JCB).
While one Moirangthem Milan (40) sustained injuries as he was hit by tear gas shells, many women were left wailing.
Many families whose houses were demolished looked forlorn and crestfallen.
After giving first aid at Moirang CHC, Milan was referred to Raj Medicity.
One Khwairakpam Meghachandra (45) collapsed on seeing the houses demolished.
He was treated at the Sendra post of 42 Assam Rifles.
