Imphal, April 02 2019:
Condemning the failure of the State Government to take up any tangible action on the demands raised by the JAC formed in connection with the custodial death of Md Manjur Ahmad, the JAC has decided to impose a 48 hour all Manipur total shutdown from 6 am tomorrow to 6 am of April 5 .
A press release issued by the convenor of the JAC, Md Salim mentioned that the 48 hours total shutdown has been called due to lack of positive response from the Government regarding the JAC's demand to book the culprits and to hand over the case to the CBI.
It however explained that the shutdown will be relaxed for delegates of NE Conference which is organised by MANPAC, as well as all emergency and essential services.
The JAC further urged all CSOs, student organisations, and the people to support the steps taken up by the JAC.
Meanwhile the Manipur Students' Association Delhi (MSAD) has demanded the State Government to punish the culprit (s) involved and to dispense justice so that such incident never happen again in the future.
MSAD also urged the State Government to respect and regard the human rights of an individual irrespective of their sociocultural and religious affiliations.
A press release issued by the general secretary of MSAD today alleged that the custodial death of Md Manjur Ahmad of Yairipok Ningthounai, in a Joint Interrogation Cell of Manipur police, is a clear case of murder which indicates an attempt to hide a high level conspiracy in 'releasing Thokchom Nando' .
Strongly condemning the shameful act, MSAD continued that four months back, the killing of Md Gaffar of Lilong in army custody went on to become a non-issue eventually.
Stating that many several cases have also remained unsolved or were closed without conducting judicial probe and were left unattended without delivering justice, MSAD opined that a State which is unable to dispense its judiciary role and which is unable to do justice towards its people is a significant character of a failed State.
A simple criticism against the State authorities on social media always gets swift justice under the so-called laws while the people get lost in the legalities of the State in seeking justice, it said.
The so-called police modernisation is just a show off to divert the funds and to increase the surveillance capacity in order to protect the State authorities rather than safeguarding the people.
To a Manipuri, mob justice is more reliable than the laws of the State where people find justice rarely, MSAD claimed.
It then added that MSAD stands in solidarity with the JAC against the custodial killing of Md Manjur Ahmad and conveyed it also endorses the resolutions taken in the public meeting by the concerned JAC yesterday in the presence of various students and civil organisations to seek justice for Manjur.
MSAD also appealed to all the Civil Societies Organisations to rise against the injustice meted out to the people in the land of AFSPA, NSA and other draconian laws.
