Imphal, November 01 2020:
The relay hunger strike launched by six student bodies namely AMSU, AIMS, DESAM, KSA, MSF and SUK in pursuance of their 12-points demand to combat COVID-19 issue in the state, has been deferred for some time.
The decision to defer the strike was taken following a meeting with the Chief Minister yesterday and in view of the translation of some of their demands, said a joint statement signed by executive members of the six student bodies.
The student bodies welcome the assurances of the State Government and will be keeping a close eye on further developments, it said while adding that they have reserved the notion to relaunch agitation in case their terms or demands are not fully addressed.
For the time being, the student bodies will be concentrating on campaigns to raise awareness and aid in enforcing new SOPs related to COVID-19, the joint statement said.
The student bodies also appealed to all to compulsorily use face masks, maintain physical distance and sanitize hands regularly with sanitizers or soaps and at the same time urged local organisations and Meira Paibis to take a proactive role in enforcing the said measures at their respective localities.
Ceremonial gatherings such as wedding events, cremation and others should be held with strict adherence to SOPs issued by the concerned authorities, the student bodies reminded.
While appealing to all to abstain from consuming chewable and non chewable tobacco products and spitting at will, the student bodies stated that the volunteers will be closely observing the activities of those involved in trading of the said items.
It is no time to only wait for the Government to act, the student bodies continued while calling on all to play their parts in effectively fighting the virus.
