Imphal, March 14, 2010:
With the enter of second to the stoppage of supply of safe drinking water by the employees of the PHED, the price of privately treated safe drinking water as well as career charge of the water tanker have been hiked.
Mention may be made that with the employees of the PHED joined the cease work strike of the JAC of AMTUC and AMGEO from Saturday last, functioning of the water supply schemes had been suspended thereby causing inconveniences to the people, particularly in Imphal city area.
Unable to get treated safe drinking water from the government water supply schemes, water tankers thronged to buy treated water from a private water treatment plan located at Chingarel near the bank of Iril river in Imphal east district from yesterday.
The water treatment plan was busy when large number of water tankers thronged as since start running the plan only about 15 tankers use to buy water earlier.
Around 100 tankers came to buy water today, said the proprietor of the private water treatment plan, L Samananda today while maintaining that water in the plan treated as per the safe drinking water supply by the PHED.
Water tankers bought the treated water at higher rate from the private plan than that from the government plan.
According to a driver of water tanker, Yumkhaibam Nanao, Rs 50 (if filled by electronic pump) and Rs 60 (if filled by diesel pump) were per tanker charged by the authority of the Porompat Water Supply Scheme but they are buying the treated water from the private plan at the rate ranging from Rs 150 to Rs 200. Drivers also gave reasons for hiking the price of water per tanker as distance of the location of the after source point which consumed more fuel apart from time consuming.
Another driver, Hemanta Shhetry said since the stoppage of the supply of water at the Porompat water supply scheme, the demand from the customers is also raised.
They are facing hard time meeting the demand as the water source point is located farther then the earlier point at Porompat.
