Imphal, August 29 2011:
The general strike as well as the blockade imposed by the SHDDC on the National Highways is set to continue as the first public meeting held today has decided on going ahead with the stir.
After taking the opinion of the people, the meeting resolved to carry on the agitation until the demand for upgrading Sadar Hills to a full fledged district is achieved.
The meeting held today at Kanglatongbi IB deliberated for several hours on the appeals of the Union Home Minister and the Chief Minister to end the highway blockade.
The meeting was also attended by SHDDC leaders, ex-Ministers, ex-MLAs, sitting MLAs, ADC Members and leaders of various civil organisations.
At the meeting, the leaders proposed lifting the blockade in line with the appeal from the Union Home Ministerand the Chief Minister.
However the proposal of the leaders was outrightly rejected by the people.

They contended that the 40 years old demand for a separate Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police for Sadar Hills is not about breaking up Manipur.
"We should carry on the agitation even if we have to pay with our lives.
Even if the Government send all its police forces, we will never call off the agitation", they asserted.
Asserting that the the assurance to upgrade Sadar Hills to the status of a full fledged district has been there since the last 40 years or so, members of the public said that this time they want something more than just verbal assurance.
The re-organisation of district boundary is welcome, they averred but added that first a Sadar Hills district should be announced.
Only after Sadar Hills is upgraded to the status of a district, should the re-organisation exercise be taken up, they announced.
Similar meetings would be held at Kangpokpi tomorrow and Saikul on August 31 to seek people's opinion on whether the agitation should be suspended or not.
