Literature, culture conclave : MU event receives international face

An International Conclave on Literature, Culture, Library and Society (ICLCLS), 2022 was held today at the Court Hall of Manipur University, Canchipur.
The conclave was jointly organised by the Department of Library and Information Science, MU; Department of Ancient History and Archeology and Rajarshi Bhagyachandra Cultural Research Centre (RBCRC) under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Culture and the Raja Rammohan Roy Library Foundation.
MU Vice Chancellor (in-charge) Prof Elangbam Bijoykumar, Dean, School of Social Sciences Prof S Mangi, Suon Dusit University Council, Thailand Chairperson Tanom Intarkumnerd, Bangla Academy, Dhaka Deputy Director Md Sahadat Hossain Nipu and Department of Library and Information Science, Gauhati University former head Prof RK Barman graced the opening session as chief guest, president, special guests respectively.
Prof Elangbam Bijoykumar said that universities ought to take major roles in community development.
Pointing out that India's National Education Policy 2020 divides universities into two groups; one for engaging only in research works and another for both research and teaching, Prof Bijoykumar said that education needs to be re-defined in all parameters.
He maintained that it was highly essential to re-define and streamline the role of libraries- so as to make libraries a greater resource of knowledge.
He said that the library is indispensable in any thorough research work.
Prof Bijoykumar also highlighted the need to further develop Library Science and ensure adequate library infrastructure.
Talking about the relationship shared between Bangladesh and Manipuris, Prof Bijoykumar said that the freedom movement of Bangladesh gave a new impetus to the Manipuris settled in Bangladesh to preserve and promote their culture, language and identity.
He also pointed out that Manipuris used to go to Bangladesh, particularly Sylhet for higher studies in the past.
Suon Duist University Council Chairperson Tanom Intarkumnerd spoke on why universities should act as a driving force for community development.
He spoke on the re-emerging agenda of community development, approaches to community development applied by the university and a movement towards greater Thai university engagement for community development.
The inaugural session was followed by a plenary session where many resource persons including delegates from Bangladesh and Thailand spoke on different topics.
