At least 15 persons were killed and 34 seriously injured when a passenger bus bound for Jessami from Imphal plunged into a 300 feet ravine yesterday at about 3.30 pm.
The passenger bus Trimurthy bearing registration number MNP-6181 was headed towards Jessami from Imphal via Ukhrul.
Sources said that the driver of the bus lost control of the vehicle due to a brake failure at Marem village at around 3.30 pm yesterday and plunged into the deep ravine.
Twelve passengers were killed at the spot while another 3 succumbed to injuries at the Ukhrul District Hospital.
All the deceased & the injured persons were brought to Ukhrul headquarters by residents of Marem Village, Marangphung Village & Ukhrul police.
The deceased persons are identified as PS Peter (51) s/o Lt PS Luikai of Hundung village, M Ngaranmi (45) s/o (L) Thikan of Poi Village, a police personnel, S Elita (27) w/o S Ngathingmi of Sihai village, L Joana (32) s/o L Thangbou of Somra Kuki Kongkhai Long, Rabi Prasad Shah (25) of Buxar district Bihar, S Joycemi d/o S Kharei of Paoyi village, S Primrose (35) d/o (L) Juiri of Paoyi Village, W Athute (50) s/o W Hewelsolo of Jessami, Chingtham Romen 30 yrs, Ch Chandra Singh of Pallel Awang Leikai, Kakching PS, Md Abdul Rok (40), Md Atao Rehman (38) both of Mana Ingekhal Hatta, Yarthing (23) of Wahong village, Ngashanchui and Khundrakpam Chanu (60) of Yairipok Part I.As there is no morgue in Ukhrul, a short funeral service was held at Ukhrul police station by all the bereaved families and social organizations of Ukhrul including the Tangkhul Naga Long, TKS, TMNL, TSL & HKL.
Minister of Higher and Technical Education, School Education, Adult Education and SCERT Francis Ngajokpa and MLA Wungnaoshang Keishing under the advice of the Chief Minister rushed to Ukhrul with 6 doctors & live saving medicines along with Rs 1 lac, which was drawn from the CM's contingency fund.
The amount was disbursed to the bereaved family members through the Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul.
The Deputy Commissioner also contributed Rs.47,000, while the Red Cross Society chipped in Rs with 10,000.MLA A Aza also donated Rs 10,000 which was delivered by his wife.
The Tangkhul Naga Long, the apex-organization of the Tangkhuls also donated a sum of Rs 1500/-each to the bereaved families.
Several public contributions were also received.
Meanwhile, 8-10 seriously injured victims have been shifted to Imphal.
