Sangai Fest brought Manipur to centrestage : Governor

Governor La Ganesan has said that the Sangai Festival is now recognized as a National event and has brought the cultural flavour of Manipur to centrestage.
Speaking as chief guest at the Cultural Evening held at Bheigyachandra Open Air Theatre (BOAT) in Imphal this evening, the Governor said that it was very comforting to see the Tourism Department making honest efforts to woo tourists and make Manipur a popular tourist destination.
The Governor further said that the Manipur Sangai Festival provides an opportunity to showcase various aspects of the traditions and culture, besides promoting "our handloom and handicraft products".
La Ganesan maintained that Manipur undoubtedly is a beautiful State with a huge potential in the tourism sector.
Continuing that one bottleneck is obviously the law and order situation which dissuades tourists from visiting Manipur, he said that the State, however, is experiencing peace since the last five years or so.
The Governor also stressed on the need to highlight the good things of the State through a multimedia campaign.
Maintaining that Tourism has enabled countries with limited resources to prosper and maintain a vibrant economy, La Ganesan said that the festival could be made more attractive by inviting more foreign entrepreneurs and cultural troupes from abroad.
Participating in the Cultural Evening as president, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that the Manipur Sangai Festival is being organized to showcase the oneness of different communities in the State.
He said that this festival of oneness will definitely help in enhancing the attachment and emotional bonding among the different communities.
The Chief Minister further said that 35 ethnic huts representing different ethnic groups have been erected at the Sangai Ethnic Park at Moirang Khunou in Bishnupur district.
Different programmes will be organized at Geljang and Behiang in Churachandpur, Makhel and Mao in Senapati district as a part of the festival while the International Polo Tournament is being organized with the participation of polo teams from US and Britain, he added.
N Biren Singh said that Chief Ministers of Arunachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have been invited to attend the festival while Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju will grace the closing ceremony.
He appealed to every Manipuri to show decency and hospitality to the people coming from different parts of the country and abroad to witness the festival.
