Along with formally taking over the investigation relating to death of Chungkham Sanjit who died in an alleged police encounter in Khwairamband Bazar on July 23, 2009, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) would also invested into the death of Thokchom Rabina in the same incident.
On the other hand, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the CBI, which has been instituted to probe into the incident, has taken a report of the incident from SP of Imphal West District L Kailun today.
According to an official source, along with CBI registering an FIR to investigate into the case, two DIGs of the investigating agency namely Nongplus and Nirja Gotra who jointly led the large SIT team today met SP of Imphal West and another police officer of the district.
After the meeting, the FIR of the case taken up by the City police and the report of the investigation conducted so far have also been handed over to the CBI team, the source disclosed.
Meanwhile, a press-hand out of the Press Information Bureau, Government of India has explained that CBI has taken over the investigation relating to the death of Chungkham Sanjit on the orders of the Imphal Bench of the Gauhati High Court.
In this incident, the death of Rabina is also being investigated.
Accordingly, the Imphal Branch of the CBI has re-registered the case on January 16 under section 302, 34 IPC and Section 27 (3) Arms Act against unknown persons of Manipur Police, the PIB hand out said.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) which has been duly constituted and headed by an IGP cum Joint Director of CBI, New Delhi and comprising two DIGs, two SPs, a team of experts of Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), CBI and medical experts from RIMS, Imphal and others is currently camping at Imphal.
The PIB hand out has also requested all persons/individuals having knowledge of the facts and circumstances of the case to contact SP, CBI, Lamphelpat over phone/e-mail/speed post.
