State Govt on alert, essential instructions issued

Following the outbreak of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPA1) at Morgram village in Birbhum district and South Dinajpur in the eastern parts of West Bengal, the State Directorate of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services has issued guidelines and a series of dos to help prevent the flu from reaching Manipur.
An order issued in this connection by the Director of the VAH Department and addressed to the authority concerned said, "There should be strict vigil in the poultry population both in organised sectors/farms as well as backyard poultry for any suspected symptoms of Avian Influenza and physical surveillance and monitoring should be accelerated for any unusual morbidity and mortality in birds.
"Daily report of any unusual morbidity and mortality in birds should be submitted to the Director of VAH by 5 pm".
The Director has also instructed all Joint Directors to co-ordinate with district/sub-divisional administrators, local leaders, village panchayat members, local clubs, NGOs etc for extensive physical surveillance for any unusual morbidity and mortality in birds.
The Joint Directors have also been asked to impart awareness/training programmes on Avian Influenza to the general public as well as poultry farmers, breeders and marketers.
All the District and Sub-divisional Vety Officers and all those in charge of Veterinary Institutions have been asked to alert all officers and staff for active physical surveillance.
Moreover, all the Veterinary Check Gates of the VAH Department have been instructed to be on vigil to ensure total ban on import of birds across international border.
Sources from the Department said that teams were sent to the Tulihal airport today to check if any chicks were brought in by flight from other States.
Teams were also deputed to check chicken centres today.
