Imphal, May 15 2015 : Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed to spearhead the agitations against the murder of two labourers and brutal torture of a class six student has cancelled the proposed demonstration scheduled on May 17.This was formally announced by A Kalpana, convener and H Modhuchandra, chairman of the JAC on Friday night following a protracted talk with Chief Minister Okram Ibobi who was assisted by Home Minister Gaikhangam and Social Welfare Minister Mirabai.

The Chief Minister placed it on record that police have arrested the culprits responsible for the murder of the two labourers and inhuman torture of the student.

Police will frame the chargesheets as soon as possible.

The government is willing to conduct an open discussion among the representatives of the major civil organisations in the state to chalk out a charter of understanding for lasting peace and communal harmony.

With the consultation of the JAC the government is taking up the issue of paying exgratia to the victims and their families.

The JAC also shares the grief of the persons and their families who might have suffered during the general agitations.

Incident-free general strike disrupts normal life
The 24 hour general strike called by the joint action committee formed to spearhead agitation against the criminal acts of the Kuki Revolutionary Front ended without any major incident on Friday midnight.

Dozens of activists rushed out in the roads during the strike violating the curfew restrictions.

However armed policemen in riot gears chased away the trouble makers before they could create law and order problems.

No arrest was made as it would have been counter productive.

Old tyres, logs were burned along the roads to obstruct the movement of vehicles.

Policemen and other personnel had a trying time in dousing the burning embers and chasing away the activists.

The 24 hour general strike was called by the joint action committee demanding drastic actions against the KRF militants for the heinous crime they had committed in bludgeoning to death two labourers and brutally torturing of a student.

The Imphal Jiribam highway was seriously affected.

Around 10 am one minister escorted a truck full of rice bags along the highway.

On seeing it people tried to intercept it and police fired tear gas canisters to disperse the activists.

Government offices, educational institutes, shops and business establishments in and around Imphal were shut down.

There were sit-in protests at several market places.

Besides women came out in the streets at various places to stop vehicles plying during the strike.
