Imphal, October 14 2020:
The Communist Party of India, Manipur State Council has stated that the uproar over the National Sports University site by people of two districts-Imphal West and Kangpokpi -with both claiming ovwnership rights, is all because of short-sightedness and mindlessnes on the part of the State Government.
CPI in a statement, recalled how the first university of its kind in India was conceived and how the site of construction of the university was shifted from Yaithibi Loukol in Thoubal to the present site.

After Parliament passed a Bill for construction of a Sports University in Manipur, former Chief Minister, O Ibobi did his best to bring the university to Yaithibi Loukol but due to the anomalies in land compensation and protests from the affected people compelled the Government to look for a new site, it recalled.
The location for the University might have been shifted to another State if the sports loving people of Senjam Chirang and Koutruk in Imphal West had not readily agreed to donate the land for construction of the university, it claimed.
The foundation stone for construction of the university was laid on March 16, 2018 by the Prime Minister, CPI recalled while adding that the issue only emerged after a signboard tagging the site as Kangpokpi district instead of Imphal West, was erected.
Due to Government's ignorance and inability to foresee likely consequences at that time, the situation has now become extremely sensitive, said CPI.
To deal with such issues, there is a need to strictly penalise encroachers who settled on reserved forest areas and hill sides, it said.
The Revenue, Settlement and Forest Departments should diligently work to ensure there are no illegal new settlements at hill sides and within Reserved Forest areas.
The recent flare ups, which took a 'communal turn' and threats to Meiteis inhabiting near the NSU site and even desecration of a religious shrine are very unfortunate and unexpected and the Government should handle it sensitively and with understanding, it said while demanding punishment of those involved in erecting the signboard at the site with Kangpokpi district tag.
