Woman on hunger strike pulled up

Tourangbam (O) Taruni, who has been staging an indefinite hunger strike since May 9 demanding action against the police personnel who brutally assaulted her, has been taken to JNIMS hospital as her condition deteriorated at around 2.10pm today.
It may be mentioned that the woman was allegedly beaten by a team of Imphal West district police commandos at Gopalji Leirak after she intervened the thrashing of some youth by the same police team on May 8 night.
Even as the locals of Uripok Sorbon Thingel, Gopalji Leirak and adjoining areas launched an agitation from May 9, Taruni also began her indefinite hunger strike demanding befitting action against the involved police personnel the same day.

A medical team led by Imphal West CMO checked Taruni's health regularly during her stir.
At around 2 pm today, a large police team came at Uripok Sorbon Thingel, where Taruni was staging her protest to pull her up.
On seeing the police team, a large number of Uripok locals surrounded Taruni to prevent entry of police near her.
However, after some minutes, police forcefully picked up the woman from there in the presence of a Duty Magistrate and took her to JNIMS hospital for treatment.
Imphal West CMO and Imphal police station OC were also present at the agitation site when Taruni was pulled up from there.
Later, irate womenfolk of Uripok took out a protest rally towards Khwairamband bazar.
The women protesters were prevented from marching further by a large police team led by S Ibomcha, Imphal West Additional SP (Law and Order) at Maharani bridge.
A heated argument broke out between the womenfolk and police there and both the sides remained unmoved till late afternoon.
Later at around 4 pm, Uripok AC MLA L Nandakumar arrived there to sort out the matter.
The womenfolk submitted a memorandum to the MLA and asked the police officer present there to take five women with them to CM Secretariat to submit a memorandum.
After a few minutes, the police fulfilled the wish of the womenfolk and took five selected women leaders to the CM Secretariat to submit the memorandum.
The representation said that Uripok locals would continue their agitation until the involved police personnel are punished.
