Professor Gangmumei Kamei passes away, many 'orphaned'

Imphal, January 05 2017:
Member of the North Eastern Council (NEC) and founder president of the erstwhile Federal Party of Manipur, Professor Gangmumei Kamei died from a terminal illness at the age 77 at his residence at Majorkhul in the morning today.
Chief Minister Okram Ibobi was among the hundreds of people who came to bid farewell to Prof Gangmumei today.
Professor Gangmumei Kamei was born in Majorkhul, Thangal Bazar, on June 1, 1940.His parents, late Chanaphul Kamei and Atonna Kamei, originally hailed from the village of Awangkhul in Tamenglong district.
He is survived by his wife, 3 sons and one daughter.

Prof Gangmumei took ill some nine-ten months back.
He passed away at his residence at Majorkhul at 8.25 am.
The last rite will be performed at Namching in Bishnupur district tomorrow, family members said.
Union Ministers of India will fly to Imphal tomorrow to attend the last rite, the family said.
Professor Kamei was a historian and a writer.
He taught History in Manipur University.
The area of his specialization was regional history of North East India and history of Manipur.
He wrote extensively on history, culture and contemporary issues of the region.
He was the president of the North East India History Association (NEIHA) in its Kohima session of 1986.He was also the president of Manipur History Society.
The late Professor also served as the coordinator of the Centre for Manipuri Studies and Tribal Research of Manipur University and guided a large number of research projects.
He had published a large number of research papers and books including A history of Modern Manipur (1826-2000), A history of Manipur : Pre-colonial period, On History and Historiography of Manipur, History of Zeliangrong Nagas : From Makhel to Rani Gaidinliu, Ethnicity and Social change (An anthology of essays), Lectures on History of Manipur etc.
He was also associated with several social and cultural bodies at the State and National level.
He was a member of the Advisory Committee of the Anthropological Survey of India (1984-87) and a member of the ICSSR panel on Tribal Studies.
In 2010, he received the Platinum Jubilee Samman (given by the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad) for his contributions to history and tribal culture of the State.
Professor Kamei was also awarded a National Fellowship by the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla in 2010-2012 .
A condolence meeting in honour of late Prof Gangmumei Kamei was held at the NEC Secretariat, Shillong.
