A collection of Manipuri poems by Jananeta Hijam Irawat Singh, Published by Naharol Sahitya Premi Samiti (Third edition 1996), Price Rs 15/-, Page 34. Reviewed by: Konsam Kulladhwaja |
This book would be classified in the group of children literature. It was first published in 1929. The Manipur State Darbar selected this book as the text book of Class V. The poems are simple and transparent. The book features 23 poems. Love of Nature is the main quality found in this book. The poems are didactic. Reading the poems it would be apparent that Irawat loves God. In his poem Ayuk Anganba, the poets writes, "All the fruit trees and flowers plants, /Shedding tear drops/ Offered handfuls of fruits and flower/ To the feet of Almighty". At length the poet advises the people to ware up and do the day's duty by chanting the God's name in the early morning. In the poem Ayuk, the poet while seeing the beautiful sight of morning, reminds God. Who creates such a beautiful sight, the poet asks questions. Last he expresses his desire to see the creator. He would like to wash the creator's feet with his teardrops. Here the feeling of the poet expressing the love of God overflows. It's a powerful feeling. The Ramayana influenced the poet so that he picks up the characters like Rama, Sita, Lakshman and Jatayu and composed the narrative poems like ‘Sita Hukhibada Ramna Tengthaba’ and ‘Sita Hubada Jatayu’. The tastes of poetry between Irawat’s Sheidam Sheireng and Imagi Puja are quite different. But these books are like the two faces of a coin. Irawat the true revolutionary who wrote patriotic songs and poems, also wrote the romantic poems. He was a man of multifarious character, not only in the social activities but also in the field of art and literature. |
