Khongji Makhol |
A collection of Manipuri short stories written by Ningombam Sunita of Thoubal, published by the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Thoubal Branch, Price Rs35/-, Page 117. Reviewed by: Konsam Kulladhwaja |
In her debut N Sunita could carve her own niche in the Manipuri literature by winning Khaidem Pramodini Gold Medal conferred by the Naharol Sahitya Premi Samiti for this year. She is the third woman writer who wins this prestigious woman's literary award. This book reflects the day-to-day atmosphere of the present Manipuri society. The stories Khongji Makhol and Ngairi Ngasisu reflect the insurgency problem and the communal clash in Manipur. To begin with an incident or a dialogue and then continue the story using flash back technique is the craftsmanship of Sunita which is very interesting and exciting. Her inner vision is deep. Due to the power of her third eye she could present a different world i.e. the unseen world before our eyes. Most of the stories reflect women's condition in the society, their sufferings and the problems. The story Sendol Singdokpa seems as if the commercial story of a sensual woman while reading the first half of the story. But when crossing the second half we could realize that it is the uplift of woman's morality. The theme of love is one of the major elements of this book. Either the Diatonic love or the sexual love or the motherly love focuses on most of Sunita's short stories. One of the gripping short stories is Likli Machet which tells the tragic fate of the narrator persona. Besides Sunita there are many promising woman writers at Thoubal. We are solicitous for further works of Sunita. |
