A Manipuri opera play written by Shasikumar Yurembam, Printed and Published by Nohakhol, Price Rs 201; Page 70. Reviewed by: Konsam Kulladhwaja |
Babul, the villain tries to poison his cousin Basanta. Unluckily his father Bali was killed with the same poison. With the help of the police inspector Keso, he charged his cousin as killer and had him jailed for murder of his father. Ramsing, an advocate and a friend of the protagonist Basanta, tried his best to save Basanta from the murder case. Bina, sister of Basanta, the tragic character faced the tortures of her cousin Babul. She was always waiting for his brother Basanta. The writer depicts a society where there is no justice. Justice is in the hands of bureaucrats. Ramsing the advocate justified it with full evidence. He is the hero in this play. There are many nice lyrics in the book. Shasikumar's creation of villain is successful. Hamartia locates just in the first episode. The hastiness of the writer's handling of tragic flaw is visible. He tries to make his play a tragedy but he fails to do so and he changes it into a tragi-comedy. Hasty marriage of Thotpi and Kanta Apaibi is doubtful in the real sense of the world. He creates the comic characters tike Kanta Apaibi very successfully. Plot is knitted very well but the title is not clear when we read the last episode of the play. The aim of Shasikumar is to bring out 100 books of Shumang Lila, promised the writer while releasing his books Mirang and Thajadana Thajaramme. To be a great writer would be his dream. He also expressed his discontent that the critics and the litterateurs are completely ignorant of the Shumang Lilas as a part of literature. This view of the playwright was defended by Dr I S Kangjam. |
