The people of India do not know much about Manipur, more so of the issues and consequences that may arise in the wake of the operation of the cease-fire. So it would be worthwhile to bring out such a book which features the facts of Manipur, its history, territory, nature of its composite polity etc. It is the most recent publication so that it could cover the names of 17 martyrs though leaves one whereas the former book published by the SILYA could cover the names of 15 martyrs only. Colorful photos reflecting the violent and the non-violent protests against the ceasefire extension without territorial limits are highlighted. The consequences of the ceasefire extension has led to massive protests in the North-East particularly in Manipur. It has also resulted the lost of precious lives, lost of public properties worth more than 35 crores of rupees, amputation of a leg of a young girl and bodily injury to hundreds of people. RK Jhalajit, the scholar and historian observes that Manipur has witnessed many big agitations since the beginning of the 20th century of all the big agitations in this State, the present agitation is the biggest: The documents highlighted in the Appendix include among others the Joint statement of the GOI and NSCN (I-M) on June 14, 2001. Agreed ground rules for ceasefire between GOI and NSCN revised, Pemberton report, 1835, Inauguration of the first Manipur State Assembly on October 18, 1948 in which king Bodhachandra proclaimed, ‘Manipur was in the height of her power Hill and Valley were one, and this oneness defended Manipur’. |
