Heirang Sana |
A novel in Manipuri by M.F. Rahman, published by Thambalnu Publications, Yairipok in 2001, Price Rs 50/-, Page 100. Reviewed by: Konsam Kulladhwaja |
The story of this novel centered around Yairipok. Heirang is the name of the hero and Sana, the heroine. The novel has two plots. The hero and heroine of the sub-plot are Kismat and Rabina. These two pairs of lovers are very much alike to the two pairs in Dr Kamal's Madhabi. I would like to call this novel the second Madhabi. Certain elements are alike. Madhabi and Heirang Sana, both the novels are romantic. The descriptions of landscape, the insertion of poems, characterization are all alike to one another. Heirang and Sana are of characters possessed by Dhiren and Madhabi. Kismat and Rabina are like Biren and Urirei respectively. Madhabi left home and spent her days in the jungle. Like this Heirang left home and lived alone in the thick forest of the Haokram hill. Madhabi left home in order to teach men Swarthatyag that is the love for all. On the other hand, Heirang left home in order to bring indiscrimination among different castes and communities. The character role of villain is weak in Heirang Sana. Communal harmony is the main theme of this novel. Such type of theme in the novel is required. It would be praiseworthy that M.F. Rahman could successfully bring forth such a theme. Different communities of people are brought together in the Ashram called Leipul which has been built by Heirang. During his days in the forest he could collect a huge amount of wealth which was hidden by the villagers once existed in the Haokram hill. Historical facts and data are given in a very realistic way. Indeed this novel could he called a historical romance on the theme of national integration. If there is any prize for literature on the theme of national integration this book might be recommended.
