A collection of Manipuri folktales written by N Bemni Singha, published by N Manisana of Hailakandi, Assam in 1996, Price Rs 25/- Page 57. Reviewed by: Konsam Kulladhwaja |
The writer would receive accolade from all the readers because it would be worthwhile to bring out books for children at this time which there is hardly any children book in Manipuri literature. Indeed, the book could influence the children to promote the reading habit. The book features eleven gripping tales. It would be praiseworthy that Bemni's magic hands now convert the oral tales handed over by our ancestors, into literature in the genre of folk tales. It would be the outside Manipuri jargon that the writer has written Taptal in spite of Tapta. We already heard the tale of Tapta. We hear the children saying, Tapta Lak-i, Tapta lak-i at night time. The tale Apangisu Iswar Lei reflects the constant effort of a man called Tombung. Tombung the foolish boy grew up. His widowed mother became old and weak. One day the mother asked the foolish son to earn money for food. With the advice of the mother Tombung learnt that man would be rich or poor according to the order given by the God of fate (Nongdamba Mapu). Then Tombung left home and searched for the God, Nongdamba Mapu. Everybody asked Tombung to go back, advised him he could not meet the God. But Tombunq never heeded to them and went persistently. With his constant effort he could meet the God at length.
