The essays featured in this book are very useful for the students of literature. The book defines what the art and literature is. The writer on his best level tries to show the Greek's view on criticism. After discussing the two Greek critics - Plato and Aristotle, the writer present a study on Graeco-Roman Criticism in which the works of the critics like Longinus, who wrote 'On the Sublime' are discussed. Distinguished poets or the writers could get the immortal fame by having the quality of sublimity. Here IR Babu chalks out the five sources of sublimity. Lofty thoughts, vehement and inspired passion are the important sources. After discussing what romantic criticism is, the writer presents the studies on William Wordsworth and ST Coleridge. We realize what Wordsworthian point of view is and expresses that poetry is gradually created after developing the following six stages: 1. Observation and description, 2. Sensibility, 3. Reflection, 4. Imagination and fancy, 5. Invention and 6. Judgment. The critical works of Matthew Arnold, TS Eliot, PB Shelley, IA Richards etc are observed well. Marxist criticism is also observed in the book against the idealistic and the hedonistic theories; the Marxist point of view is inducted into literature.
