Yet to be answered question : Whose bullet killed Rabina ?
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: February 09 2016 -
If one goes by the admission of former Head Constable, Th Herojit, it was him who fired the shots that killed an unarmed Ch Sanjit inside Maimu Pharmacy at BT Road on July 23, 2009.
The bomb in the admission is the allegation that he fired the shots under instructions from the then Additional SP of Imphal West police AK Jhalajit.
That Jhalajit is now the SP of Imphal West police makes this allegation all that more serious.
Important to note that AK Jhalajit has rubbished the allegation of Th Herojit and it is best to leave the matter to the Court but one question which has not been answered at all is from where did the bullet that killed Rabina come ?
Rewind to July 23, 2009 and if one goes by what the then Additional SP had to say to the media then Rabina was killed by the bullet fired by an individual who whipped out a gun and opened fire when asked to stop for checking at the thoroughfares connecting Paona Keithel and Thangal Keithel.
‘That man’ is presumed to be Ch Sanjit. Chief Minister O Ibobi parroted the same line when he explained the incident on the floor of the House, the same day.
Remember the Assembly session was on at the old Assembly complex.
Fast forward to 2016 and the admission of Th Herojit has obviously blunted the explanations furnished by the then Additional SP and the Chief Minister and this is where the question, ‘who killed Rabina ?’ gains credence.
As far as the admission of Th Herojit goes, Sanjit was unarmed at the time he was shot dead.
If one goes by what the Chief Minister and the then Additional SP had to say then did he throw his gun away on being cornered by the cops ?
Questions and all questions and this is where it is important to re-open the case, apart from the one already filed by the CBI.
The admission of Herojit should not be brushed aside for it throws open a number of question and with a case lodged in the Supreme Court on the alleged extra-judicial killings in Manipur, it is sure to add more teeth to the allegations raised against the State Government.
It is early days yet, but the State Government need to show that it recognises the chain of command in the police structure.
If what Herojit said is true then it was him who fired the fatal shots but on the instructions of a senior officer and this is where taking cognizance of the chain of command becomes important.
The people should know who killed Rabina and let not this question be clouded by cooked up reports.
