'World looks up to Irom Sharmila, not our govt'
Mumbai Mirrror | Jyoti Punwani | December 11, 2011
A small group of students from the JJ School of Art, each holding a painting, walked in silent procession from the Flora Fountain to the NGMA at Kala Ghoda on Saturday evening.
These paintings had been made specially as a tribute to Manipuri icon Irom Sharmila, and her 11-year-fast in protest against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), by artists such as Nalini Malani and Rekha Rodwittiya, as part of the event ‘Artists for Irom Sharmila’.
Despite the fact that no traffic was disturbed and no crowd gathered to take a look, the students, led by artist Tushar Joag, were stopped by the police stationed at the Flora Fountain chowky on grounds of not taking the required permission.
They also confiscated the paintings the students were carrying and ordered the cameramen present to stop taking pictures of the paintings, saying that shooting in the area was not allowed without permission.
