World Tourism Day, 2016
27th September, 2016
The issue of democratization of public spaces is intricately linked to tourism. Spaces such as Roads, streets, mobility modes, parks, museums, markets etc, which are also tourism sites, are rarely accessible to children, elderly and those differently abled.
With increasing sensitivity towards these excluded populations, there is now greater awareness and effort in some circles to build more inclusive and enabling designs with easier access.
This year’s World Tourism Day with the theme “Tourism for All: Promoting Universal Accessibility” is a step towards this. The global observation is celebrated by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) worldwide under this theme.
Shared Grounds Foundation (SGF) along with India Tourism (Manipur), Spastic Society Manipur, MATO, MCC,Imphal Valley Academy and Talkmore Entertainment organized a tour program for 15 people with special needs to Mapao Village, Senapati District.
This Tangkhul village, located 16 Kms away from Imphal, is considered to be one the cleanest village in India’s North East. The participants were honored with a ‘Lengyaan’ at the Mapao village. Later, the team went to Kangla and with the help of a guide, they explored this key historically significant site.
The event was flagged off by Ch Manglemjao of the Spastic Society and Disabled Welfare Organization. Silas Thangal, India’s Consul-General at Guangzhou, China was the Chief Guest of the event.
