World Mental Health Day 2022 at NSU, Imphal
National Sports University (NSU) organised a series of programmes on the 101h of October to celebrate the World Mental Health Day with the theme - "Make Mental Health and Well-being for All a Global Priority". A workshop program was held at National Sports University Multipurpose Indore Hall, Khuman Lampak Sports Complex.
Dr. Kuldeep Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Sports Psychology, NSU took a session on 'Understanding Mental Health and Well-being in Sports' and highlighted on the Global scenarios as well as Indian scenarios of how mental health is being understood in sports environment. He also mentioned about the importance of growing need of mental health among athletes.
Dr. N. Debala Chanu, Assistant Professor, Department of Sports Psychology, NSU spoke on 'Identifying Mental Health Issues and its Interventions' and highlighted on the various types of mental health issues such as Depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, etc. How to identify the markers of Mental health issues were discussed and how the coaches and officials can help when an athlete is facing mental health issues was also explained. Screening of mental health for athletes also done as part of the workshop.
The celebration of mental health day also included various activities such as ' Gratitude Exercise', 'Bingo Game', 'Task Oriented Exercises' and ' Yoga Exercise' as the program continued. The activity of Gratitude exercise was done as part of need of feelings for gratitude to all those present at the workshop. The workshop continued with such fun and meaningful activities to celebrate mental health day.
On the occasion, Dean of Academics, National Sports University, Dr. Usha. S. Nair addressed the gathering and deliberated on the importance of celebrating the day and especially among the Sports Fraternity. She further added how this will help the athletes as well as the coaches to foster a psychologically safe environment for them.
The World Mental Health Day was also celebrated at Mary Kom Regional Boxing Foundation in collaboration with the National Sports University to create awareness of mental health and mental health issues for the budding sportspersons at the institute.
Sessions were conducted by Dr. Kuldeep Singh and Dr. N. Debala Chanu on various aspects of Mental health and its relevance in the field of sports and also strategies to tackle them. Miss Nenah Chungkham, Sports Psychologist, Mary Kom Boxing Foundation, also took a session on positive mental health and its importance in sports.
