World Bamboo Day 2016 celebrated at Panjab University, Chandigarh
Every year around the globe 18th September is observed as World Bamboo Day. Research Scholars working with Dr. Nirmala Chongtham from the Department of Botany, Panjab University, Chandigarh, India also observed the day at P.N. Mehra Botanical Garden.
Dr. Nirmala Chongtham is a World Bamboo Ambassador from India and this year she is invited by the American Bamboo Society for celebrating World Bamboo Day at Washington DC and for delivering a lecture on “Bamboo shoot as a Health Food”.
She is also invited at the “4th International Symposium on Bamboo and Guadua” which is to be held on the 28th, 29th and 30th of September, 2016 at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Bogotá, Colombia.
Bamboo Day celebration at P.N. Mehra Botanical Garden started at 10:00am. Students from different department and members from Panjab University Bicycle Lovers attended the celebration.
A board with a list of 29 bamboo species growing in the Bambusetum was placed which marked the opening of the celebration. It was then followed by introducing a new guest i.e. Shibataea kumasaca Nakai (Fortune Inviting Bamboo) to the Bambusetum. All the participants visited the bambusetum and an idea of how to identify different bamboo species and its importance as a health food and wood was discussed.

Bamboo cookies was provided as light refreshment and most of the participants were surprised to know that bamboo shoot can be eaten as vegetable and food products like biscuits can also be prepared.
They were very keen to know more about bamboo as a food, someone even shows their enthusiasm to start working with bamboo for future. Everyone was given a bamboo plant which concluded the day.
