Will-o'-the-Wisp
- Deep from the Soul -
K. Radhakumar *
It is not every day
My wife smiles,
Her eyes full of laughter.
Such a moment makes me think
I have mellowed,
Mellowed a great deal
Since our romantic days at college
When we whispered
Sweet nothings to each other's ear –
I could feel my voice was husky with longing.
Yesterday's beauty is dead
And a new one is born.
Beauty is a fleeting smile;
For a fleeting moment I am happy to the core.
Eternity has provided a dramatic backdrop
For the brevity of human life.
Eternity is not immortality –
It is incidental music
For a play called life
Which is absurd in parts
And never enjoyed as a coherent whole.
Eternity is living a full life,
Complete with tragic incidents;
A series of moments
Lived to the full.
My eternity is not time without an end –
I do not promise such a thing
Nor am I filled with longing for
A state of existence outside time.
Smile your smile of contentment, love!
O thou daughter of my mother-in-law
Oblivious of the unwelcome visitor
Lurking in the shadows.
