Why no ban on Maggi?
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: June 08 2015 -
Most of the states have banned sale of Maggi and some foreign countries are following suit. This is because of the presence of lead at dangerous levels.
It is another story if the company which is protesting its innocence is going to a law court.
The results of the laboratory testings of the confiscated Maggi sample are not made public.
From the free sale nothing objectionable may have been found in sharp contrast to that of other states.
It cannot be treated as the personal information of some officials since it concerns the health of the people in general and young children in particular.
Health minister ought to look into this murky affair. The people are entitled to know the result and the reason why Manipur is not banning the sale.
In normal circumstances a ranking official should have rushed to that particular state or any other state where there is laboratory facility.
It is fraught with question marks why the government had not done so despite the fact that it concerns the lives of the children.
More importantly, it will be interesting to know why the government is sleeping over the report and is not banning like other state governments.
The Opposition members have also an obligation to the people. In fact they should have publicly questioned as to why the government officials are behaving in this suspicious manner.
There had been disturbing reports of people getting dizzy or losing consciousness after imbibing packed soft drinks.
While there is no official indication whether a testing was conducted the unscrupulous traders were not pulled up and the identical poisonous soft drinks are on display in all shops and roadside kiosks.
Because of the kid glove treatment given to the merchants of death they continue to play with the lives of the people.
The situation had come to such a sad pass that high officials took recommendations from the chamber of commerce while fixing the prices during the protracted blockade against Manipur.
Not surprisingly these prices were much higher than the prevailing market prices.
Is there anyone to bell the cat?
