Water wars on the rise in North East India
Morung Express | Guwahati, December 29 (TNN):
The northeast is endowed with the bounty of water resources, but this boon is turning into a bane of sorts with water-related conflict emerging as a major problem in the region.
Experts are of the opinion that as ownership of natural resources rests mainly with communities in most parts of the northeast, state control over the resources has been a source of conflict for many communities. The move to utilize natural resources of the region, including water resources, without the involvement of indigenous communities and traditional institutions, has become the flashpoint of many conflicts in the region, they point out.
The ongoing opposition to mega-dams in the region by various civil society bodies, they said, is one of the major manifestations of water-related conflict. With two transnational rivers - Brahmaputra and Barak - flowing through the region, experts also do not rule out the potentiality of international conflict over utilization of the resources of these rivers. And this seems to have already begun, with Bangladesh expressing its dissent over the 1500 MW Tipaimukh dam in Manipur.
Likewise, China's plan of a dam on the higher reaches of the Brahmaputra in Tibet is all set to upset India's efforts of exploiting the water resources of Brahmaputra in the northeast.
