War tourism
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: June 27 2015 -
Due to government bunglings and mismanagements the state has failed to attract tourists from India and aboard despite the fact that there are many things they will not find anywhere in the world.
The brow-antlered deer, the shiroy lily are unique to Manipur. Then there are enchanting Manipuri dance which is a form of worship.
This is the birth place of polo although there are some half hearted and untenable counter claims from countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan.
There is no sincere move from the government level even at this late hour to reinvigorate the tourism industry in Manipur.
In any case the burgeoning armed movement, senseless bloodshed, disruptive campaigns by some sections have had adverse impact on tourism.
In any case the domestic tourists cannot be lured for obvious reasons. All that they get by way of conducted tour is rushing to the Sendra tourist home and return long before nightfall.
And the Loktak lake is more enticing than the Chillika lake.
In this backdrop it is commendable that the Manipur Tourism Forum and the World War II Imphal campaign foundation in conjunction with the Manipur government are trying to make the state a war tourism destination.
Once the war museum and others are made available lots of people from Japan, the UK and others from where the soldiers of allied forces had come, war historians and other enthusiasts shall visit Manipur on regular basis.
Apart from absence of tourist facilities there is no congenial mindset to welcome tourists and this will be the most prominent stumbling block.
A sincere attempt should be made considering the tourism potentiality in the state.
Manipur is the proud place where bloody battles were fought at several areas between the Japanese and allied forces.
Besides it was at Moirang that the first flag of an independent India was hoisted there by the INA.
These historical records are strong enough to lure tourists from home and abroad.
