WPW Syndrome operated and cured
Mrs. Babina, 38 years old lady, resident of Khabam, Imphal East District developed severe palpitation with pulse rate of 200/min (normal average 72/min) while she was visiting her maternal home at Naoremthong, Imphal West. She felt miserable, dizzy and thought she would collapse and die and therefore rushed to a nearby private hospital, Imphal West. She received first aid treatment there and was advised to go outside Manipur for curative treatment called Electrophysiological Study (EPS) and Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) Therapy.
The condition is called Wolff-Parkinson-WhiteSyndrome (WPW Syndrome) with Atrioventricular Re-entrant Tachycardia (AVRT). The patient and her husband became panic thinking of going to a distant place, cost of travel, cost of treatment amounting to lakhs of rupees, with whom to go and whom to contact there. They belong to poor family and approached Chief Minister of Manipur, Shri N. Biren Singh for help to go outside Manipur. Shri N. Biren Singh advised her to go to SKY Hospital, Imphal West for the necessary treatment.
Mrs. Babina was admitted on 14th November, 2018 at SKY Hospital, underwent the proposed highly specialised and sophisticated operation / procedure called EPS and RFA on 15th November, 2018. It involves putting in 4 electrical wires called electrodes inside the heart under local anaesthesia, 3 through femoral vein (at the groin level) and 4th one through right internal jugular vein (at the neck level).
After careful and precision mapping of the electrical activity of the heart, the accessory pathway (in her case - left atrial lateral accessory pathway) was identified and was ablated (destroyed) using Radio Frequency Energy generated from a special energy source outside the patient. The procedure started at 11:15 am and complete successfully at 2:00 pm.
Figure 1 shows ECG (before operation) with WPW Syndrome. Figure 2 taken after the operation shows normalisation of ECG indicating successful Ablation Therapy.
She started eating and drinking 2 hours after the procedure, started to walk on 16th November, 2018 and was discharged home on 17th November, 2018. The operation charge, hospital charge, medicine - all were provided free under CMHT.
Dr. Lairikyengbam Shyamkishore, Chairman & Chief Cardiologist of SKY Hospital expressed his satisfaction and happiness on the successfully conducted highly specialised operation / procedure - EPS and RFA at SKY Hospital. He also appreciated Shri N. Biren Singh, Chief Minister of Manipur who appropriately advised the patient to go to a local hospital where world class heart treatment is provided and helped save patient’s life and state’s money worth lakhs of rupees.
Dr. Shyamkishore appealed to the people of Manipur to be aware of various sophisticated and specialised infrastructure and facilities available at SKY Hospital for operative and non-operative treatment of various complex heart diseases to reduce physical and mental hardship, cost of travel to distant places and actual cost of treatment.
