Urge Nagaland government to review security
Kohima, 19th May 2019
The news about the arrest of Haryana based hitman in Lucknow who was reportedly contracted to kill a Nagaland based politician is indeed shocking and unprecedented. As per the statement of Delhi Police, the arrested hitman and his associates were paid a sum of Rs 80 Lakhs and a Ford Endeavour SUV for the hit job. This revelation goes on to prove some politico-criminal nexus at highest level.
NPCC is seriously concerned about this shocking development especially the condition to kill after the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. We therefore urge both Delhi Police and Nagaland Police for a thorough probe to unearth the masterminds behind this heinous conspiracy of attempting to eliminate political leaders. It is commendable on the part of Nagaland Police to promptly depute an IG rank officer to Delhi to be part of joint investigation with Delhi Police.
We also urge the government of Nagaland to review security cover of top political leaders irrespective of party affiliations. During the past few years, security cover for majority of opposition party leaders have either been scaled down or withdrawn in the name of austerity and low threat perceptions.
In such a scenario, many political party leaders are left vulnerable to attacks from criminal elements. With this shocking development, the state government must ensure prophylactic security arrangements are put in place to deter any criminal minds from carrying out their dastardly act.
