Unfortunate development at Lilong Nungei
20 December 2016
Emergency Meeting
At Central Park of the University of Delhi
20th Dec. 2016
Taking cognizance of the current unfortunate development at Lilong Nungei area, Manipur where animosity between the two neighbouring communities of Meitei and Pangal has taken a violent turn, the Delhi Association of Manipur Muslims Students (DAMMS) has organized an emergency meeting at the Central Park of University of Delhi on this day.
DAMMS considers this upturn of events, in which attacks and counter attacks have been meted out against each other, seriously giving rise to the deteriorating conditions of communal harmony and creating trust deficit among the communities. DAMMS have arrived to the following resolutions:
1. We condemn the attacks and counter attacks and the responsible forces that have contributed to this clear communal disturbance.
2. It has been observed during the last few days that some of the media firms have been repeatedly informing the public with biased news against the minority community, thereby, depicting and denigrating the community to mere hate mongers.
3. Considering this turn up of events, it is observed that media has an active role in fueling the communal tension, instead of reporting fair news. We condemn this unprofessional and unethical practice from such media firms.
4. We also strongly condemn the State Minority Commission for their inept and inaction to protect the rights of the minority community.
5. We further condemn the failure of the state police to provide safety and security of the people, despite some policemen were stationed in the communally affected area. Because of this, few of the injured eleven Pangals have sustained from bullet injuries in the gun-attack from the perpetrators.
6. Therefore, we appeal to different civil society organisations, community leaders, elected representatives of the area and the state government, and other related stake-holders to come together in the fight against such disturbing communal violence that threatens the peaceful coexistence of communities.
