Ugly side of VIPsm on the roads : Menace on the road
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: December 10, 2014 -
Menace on the road. VIPsm cannot get uglier than this.
Shoo off the others who are on the road to make way for the political netas and the uniformed personnel.
A reflection of a mindset that might is right and to hell with the common people.
A practise that has become a sort of a fashion statement so much so that these class of people are increasingly creating mayhem on all the roads in Imphal and elsewhere in the State.
The common people have to be on guard not only against stray animals on the road but also that breed of people who come under the tag of VIPs and uniformed personnel.
The haughtiness is palpably clear. Difficult to trace the genesis of such a mindset but more than clear that it is the presence of an all pervading thought that they are above the law.
Traffic rules and regulations do not apply to them.
On the other hand traffic cops more often than not feel compelled to stop others from proceeding forward just so that the VIPs and the uniformed personnel may pass through smoothly.
Not an uncommon sight to see security personnel zooming around the roads in Imphal with their men blowing whistles and shouting at the top of their voice to make way, never mind the fact that the road may just be too crowded to make way.
Everyone is expected to fall in line with the shouts and the shrill noise that the whistles make. Making way for the VIPs may as well be made a mandatory lesson in all driving schools in Manipur.
Time to educate the class of people who come under the nomenclature of VIPs and uniformed personnel that the roads are not their personal fiefdom.
Absolutely makes no sense to stamp their authority by bull dozing their way through the crowded roads of Imphal. A point which not only the political netas should digest but also the so called law keepers.
One way traffic norms do not apply to these people.
Traffic rules are applicable to only the normal beings who do not come under the category of the uniformed personnel or those who do not enjoy political patronage.
Compounding the traffic nightmare of Imphal.
And to think that the confusion created all over the roads in Imphal are compounded by the presence of roads which are no better than dirt tracks and it certainly makes one sick with disgust.
The VIP syndrome may not be unique to Imphal, but take the conditions of the roads and other factors into consideration and it becomes all that much more unacceptable.
It is not only the increasing traffic volume and the width of the road which have added to the traffic nightmare but the growing culture of throwing one’s weight around.
