The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in coordination with the United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan (UNIC), is organizing a one-day Media Workshop in New Delhi, India, the host of World Environment Day 2011.
The workshop is organized under the banner of UNEP's Reporting Green series, which aims to provide journalists with in-depth knowledge and access to information about pressing environmental issues.
The workshop adopts the World Environment Day 2011 theme -- Forests: Nature at your Service. Sessions, lead by top environmental experts and policy leaders, will focus on the role of forests in combating climate change, conserving biodiversity and catalysing social and economic development.
About UNEP's Reporting Green Journalism Workshops
Since 2010, over 230 journalists from 38 countries have participated in UNEP's Reporting Green programme, which aims to:
- Provide media professionals with easy access to the latest scientific data and information.
- Encourage direct interaction and dialogue between journalists and influential environmental leaders including scientists, policy-makers, government officials, NGOs and United Nations experts
- Explain the science behind complex topics such as climate change, ecosystems management, biodiversity …etc. – with focus on how human life and activity impact, and are impacted by, the natural world.
- Mainstream environmental reporting within other genres: economic, political, current affairs, sports, health …etc. by focusing on relevant cross-cutting issues, including the relationship between the environment, sustainable development and poverty alleviation.
A limited number of sponsored invitations is available and will be awarded to international and local journalists on first come basis.

SPONSORSHIP
UNEP will sponsor the travel and accommodation of a limited number of journalists from outside of India and from various Indian provinces. The sponsorship will cover air tickets and basic hotel accommodation, covering the period from 1 to 5 June 2011.
New-Delhi based journalists participating in the event are eligible for a stipend to cover expenses associated with their participation. Only a limited number of sponsored invitations is offered and will only be awarded on first come basis.
WORKSHOP STRUCTURE
The Workshop is made up of 3 main sessions focusing on the following key topics:
Mainstreaming the Economics of Nature– case studies from India and the world.
The Value and Sustainability of Forests Ecosystems: The role of forests in combating climate change , conserving biodiversity and catalysing transformation to Green Economy.
Climate Change Adaptation in High Mountain Areas
SESSIONS
Total Duration of each session : 90 minutes
Each session will be structured as such:
Presentation by lead expert : 35 minutes
Comments/interventions by the Panel of Experts : 20 minutes
(Each session will host a Panel of Experts made up of 3 members representing NGOs, Gov, UN, Academia and/or Business to comment or elaborate on the presentation)
Moderated Open Floor discussion and Q&A : 35 minutes
Wrap-up Session:
Open Market : 60 minutes
The final session of the workshop will take the form of an Open Market, whereby each of the day's experts will occupy a booth with open access to the journalists, who will be allowed to have up to a 10 minute one-on-one session with each of the experts.
