UNC 'curfew' continues - Council campaigns for 'alternative arrangement'
The Telegraph | Imphal, Nov. 29:
The United Naga Council (UNC) continued its “public curfew” for one hour at the Naga-inhabited areas after lifting the economic blockade from 6 this morning. Yesterday, the UNC, following an appeal from Union home minister P. Chidambaram, announced lifting of the blockade imposed on Imphal-Jiribam and Imphal-Dimapur highways in protest against division of Naga areas while creating the proposed Sadar Hills district out of Senapati district.
During the hourlong “public curfew”, shops were closed and vehicles stayed off the roads. Buses and other vehicles passing through Naga areas along state and national highways were stopped by “curfew” enforcers and allowed to proceed after the “public curfew” was over.
The UNC is also campaigning for an “alternative administrative arrangement” in the four Naga-dominated districts of Chandel, Ukhrul, Tamenglong and Senapati by holding one rally each in the district headquarters.
