Turning Point
K. Padmakumar *
The horse I ride should take me
To the place I'd like to, and I'd ride on
Throwing off the shackles of bondage –
This is what I did believe at one point of time.
I was wonderstruck to the core –
There my horse stood
Carrying me to a place beyond me
And a place never in my wildest dreams seen.
Overwhelmed I was at the strange sight,
All things spun round and round
And I was suddenly deaf as a post.
Does the horse follow me? Or
I the horse?
The incident forced me to think.
The prophecy of the astrologer
Made many years ago
Came true, as sure as eggs is eggs.
Like the moon suffering from the eclipse
Dull and devoid of warmth and feeling,
I began to love my friends all over again
From that escapade onwards.
(Translated from the Manipuri Maion Leppa by K Radhakumar who is also the poet's son. In the footnote to the manuscript , Daddy prayed the English translation of the title of the poem should be
'Turning Point')
