Extra Weft Making
Tribal women make use of extra weft technique while making different kinds of design in cotton and woollen cloths. After weaving of the weft is begun, the threads used for extra weft are then woven through the warp with the help of hands or with small Pangaltem (shuttle). After this the weft thread is pressed with the help of the Tern. In this way, designs with extra weft are created one after another.
Creation of extra weft design in a Loin Loom, as practised by some tribes of Manipur involves the use of a particular Utong-pointed bamboo bar. It is used as addendum to the commonly used bamboo bar. While forming shed by means of heald shaft, the pointed bamboo bar is used for piercing in and out of the loop. In making extra weft design too, the particular equipment, ranging from one to two in number, is found being used by the weavers of some communities.
