Towards Freedom
Bishwajit Khumukcham *
As I walked towards freedom,
I see the mountains growing stranger,
The trees becoming dry, the village yielding no more,
The light only the sun, the moon between the clouds,
The dogs changed sides, people forgotten causes,
Water there, algae there,
Drains here, river where?
Brothers insulting brothers,
Politician's minting money,
The woods too dark,
The Earth too cold,
I have a gun, my hand holds it,
My stomach growls, my foots too cold,
I need food, I need shoes,
As I walked towards freedom, I realized I don't need freedom.
