Tom & Lydia: A Love Song
Nongthombam Neebendra Singh *
Scene from a distant Past:
Some pretty pastoral magic had enraptured Tom,
nuances of sweetness came on the spur of the moment,
while driving down the lone road outside of town...
The gusts of green air: chillness of fragrant winds blowing,
time and time again, with soft force, on his face freshly...
amid the harmony of a myriad of rustling green leaves,
of elephantine eucalyptus arrays on both sides of highway,
that moment arrived: came then a smile on the boy Tom's face...
His only one enchantment: as lovely Lydia awaited her heart's boy...
a good gentleman, the handsome Tom ,the admirable Tom.
All admiration: and Tom spoke about the last time they'd met...
such long days of passions abstract ,such long months of affections silent
that singly regal reflection of his humble heart: angelic Lydia, his sweet Lydia.
And Lydia, happier than ever, began with smiling her beautiful smile,
while a sweet sparkle glinted away from her round eyes of beauty ...
Tom, overwhelmed, spoke no more, lost in that rarest of ecstasies:
a split-second moment of rare romance: a moment in a million years...
for two honest and passionate young admirers, and God did know
they really loved each other, they really tended to care for...
Interlude: The Reality of Life:
Some vicissitudes came, stayed, went away...
But the ever silent stars had looked down,
the Wheels of Fate had turned the other way round...
the silver river turned muddy, and changed its course...
and the long cherished consummation never came...
but tears in torrents, sleepless nights, tears in torrents,
the long dreamy road had to part into separate ways...
for unwanted reasons, might be single, might be many...
Remembrance of Things Past:
An unhappy conclusion of a tumultuous tale of sweet nature,
something gone for good, yet never wholly distant from...
Such has been the sad story of Tom, such has been Lydia's...
A rather immaterial tale now, but for those passions pure.
Youthful yesteryears' loves: reminded at times,
niches carved in each other's throbbing hearts...
forgotten forever, forgotten never ever...
forgotten forever, forgotten never ever...
Such is the mild magic of love, whatever one calls it...
Such is the bright beauty of hearts, the undying Platonic...
